Avalanche warning for region Indre Troms Sunday 19.01.2020

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
There is a persistent weak layer high in the snowpack, especially at 500masl. Also, pay attention to wind slabs.

Avalanche problems

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3). Remote triggering is possible.

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Saturday 18. January 2020

De siste dagene har det vært minusgrader, moderat vind og litt nedbør. I skogen ligger stedvis mye løs snø. Over tregrensen ligger fortsatt 10-20cm ubundet snø mange steder. Ellers er det fokksnøflak av varierende hardhet som preger bildet.

Det er observert lag med kantkorn over og under skarelag over 500 moh. Dette er under utvikling og må følges med på.

Mountain weather

Saturday 18. January 2020

Little to no precipitation. Fresh breeze from southeast. -15 °C to -7 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Sunday 19. January 2020

2-3 mm precipitation. Strong breeze from southeast, changing to strong breeze from the south during the evening. -14 °C to -5 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment

Sterk vind vil legge opp fersk fokksnø i le for sørøst og sørlig vind. Eldre fokksnøflak ventes å ha stabilisert seg.

Kantkornlag over skarelag høyt i snødekket er under utvikling. Det bryter lett og har god bruddforplanting selv om snøen over er løs. Slike lag kan utvikles svært fort med kalde temperaturer som nå. Oppsprekking og drønn er tydelige faretegn.
